It is important that a group’s leader or a specific committee not stray so far outside the mission and goals that members lose sight of their purpose. This can be done by adhering to the organization’s strategic plan or strategic direction and by the board of directors receiving reports not just about the organization’s activities but how those activities support the goals. Repeat: institutionalize progress reporting that is organized along the lines of the strategic plan.

Often, activities start happening in an organization that don’t align with any goals. When that happens, a decision must be made to either change the activities or change the goals. It’s pretty simple. The trick is to be deliberate about noticing when a practice is out of line with policy and do something about it. Either change the writing of the goals or change the actions in the field.
